DESIGN PROCESS

Phase 1 | Initial consultation

The starting point for every project is to meet in person on-site so I can get a sense of your taste and a feel for the site. We start by walking the site together and then sit down to tease out the brief. I follow up with a rough idea of what services you might need and the related costs.

I charge a fixed consultation fee which is deductible from the final design fee.

Phase 2 | Survey & Site Analysis

The next step is a topographical survey to map the site. This documents important information such as contours, levels, existing trees, utilities, structures etc. which will inform the design. I return to photograph the site and subsequently produce a Site Analysis document which combines the survey information, aspects of the brief and my initial thoughts regarding the site.

Some projects may require additional tree and/or ecological surveys. Surveyor costs are not included in my fees, however, I can arrange them on your behalf.

Phase 3 | Concept Design

I then present the concept design. This takes the form of an A3 presentation including a top-view plan of the new layout, 3D visualisations, section elevations and mood boards for both hard and soft landscaping to give you an idea of what the finished garden may look like. The focus at this stage is primarily on layout and functionality rather than the fine details. The presentation serves as a discussion document which can evolve with feedback over the course of this phase of the project.

Phase 4 | Developed Design

Following your feedback I start to refine the design concept and look at the details. I shortlist materials and finishes to select for the build and in some cases we will visit suppliers and sites to see them used in situ. I present the developed design for approval before we move on to the next phase.

Phase 5 | Planting Plan

Based on the brief and your feedback on the soft landscaping moodboards presented with the concept design I will produce detailed planting plans and a plant schedule. The schedule lists exact names, quantity, size and planting. Many clients like to be closely involved with this part of the design process and I will work collaboratively with you whether you know a lot or just a little about plants. At this stage it’s important to work with your site, your soil type and aspect.

Phase 6 | Technical Design

Once the concept is finalised, I produce detailed drawings for every aspect of the project. This covers the specification for all materials from the smallest details to the largest. It includes important instructions for the contractor such as setting out, drainage, irrigation and lighting plans. You may take it for granted that every designer can provide this level of detail accurately, but not everyone has relevant training and experience. This stage is crucial to be able to cost accurately and build it properly.

Phase 7 | Tendering

The detailed design document forms a tender that we send out to three reputable, local landscapers who will provide quotes. Because of the level of detail provided, we can guarantee each quote is for exactly the same materials and specs, enabling you to choose the best value. I analyse the quotes and write a report summarising the benefits and any concerns of each quote so you can make an informed decision on who to appoint. Typically l source and supply the plants in order to choose the best quality available but should you wish, a landscaper can also do this.

Phase 8 | Construction & Planting

Once you have selected a landscaper, I will appoint them on your behalf and construction can start. I offer regular site visits at key intervals of the build in addition to ad hoc troubleshooting where needed. We decide the frequency together before construction begins but this can also be fairly flexible. I set the plants out myself and the landscaping team plants them. Depending on your preference, I can provide a detailed plant maintenance schedule should you need one.

Every project is different.

While many projects span the entire design process from start to finish, it may be that your existing garden simply needs some tweaks to realise its full potential. I will work with you to create a tailor made package to suit your needs from the following services:

01. Advice Sessions

For those of you who don’t need the full design package or any of the standalone services listed below, I offer one-off, one-to-one consultations. These take place either in person at your home or over video call. This is a perfect service for those looking for inspiration to design their own garden or help you find solutions for specific issues be it planting, hard landscaping, furniture recommendations or simple layout improvements. Please note, if you want a full redesign, planting or lighting plans, please contact me and we can discuss your needs.

02. Planting Plan

While a well-designed garden can last for generations to come, plants are more fickle. Some naturally decline over the years, others need a different soil or aspect to thrive. You may have inherited a garden that simply doesn’t reflect your style. There are many reasons to refresh your planting beds and a bespoke planting plan can help you achieve just that. If required I can also provide a detailed maintenance plan.

03. Lighting Plan

Lighting adds a much-needed aesthetic and practical element to your garden. In many cases, it is an afterthought or not considered at all. I can design a detailed lighting plan and help you select the right system to bring your garden to life and highlight key areas and features.

04. Planning Applications

If you are a developer or a self-builder applying for planning permission there has never been a more critical time to engage an expert when considering your landscaping. From 2024 onwards new development will be required to deliver a minimum of 10% biodiversity net gain (BNG). Knowing how to implement recommendations from an ecological survey in an attractive and functional way is not an easy feat. I can consult and provide designs to submit with your planning application, backed up by the latest research on species and techniques to maximise biodiversity.

These are the main standalone packages I offer, however, every client has different needs and the above is not an exhaustive list. If you don’t see what you’re looking for please contact me and we can work out a bespoke package to suit your needs.

FAQ

  • As a rule of thumb, you should be looking to spend between 5-8% of the value of your home on your garden. Prices vary from the hundreds for advice to tens or hundreds of thousands depending on the scale, complexity and desired finish of your project.

Much like building a house, the costs for landscaping your garden range depending on the quality of materials, finish and craftsmanship. Prices per square metre range from a minimum of £100 per square metre for the most basic materials up to around £500 per square metre for quality comparable to an RHS show garden.

Every project is costed on a case-by-case basis. You will need to cover not just materials and plants but design/professional fees and labour.

  • Popular shows like My Garden Made Perfect are wonderful sources of inspiration and really reflect our national love for our gardens. However, the pricing is not reflective of reality. They often only cover the cost of materials at trade price and don’t account for the cost of labour, fees and that those professionals involved are trying to run profitable businesses.

  • The fee model is flexible and very much depends on the scale and complexity of the project. Typically I will charge an hourly rate for ad-hoc jobs, quote a lump sum for very small/simple projects and a percentage fee for mid-to-large projects. Once we have had our initial consultation I will follow up with a formal fee proposal.

  • Typically you should expect 6 weeks between the initial consultation and the developed design. This can vary depending on the timeframe for surveys and client feedback. The timeframe for construction will depend on the scale and complexity of the project and the landscaper’s availability. Planting is done in the next planting season (November-March) following completion of the build.

  • No. Larger, more complex projects can easily be truncated into phases over a longer period of time if needs be. Some things make sense to do together to save you undoing or redoing work later on, but we can discuss this and figure out a plan that works for you and the project together.

  • ‘No maintenance’ is a phrase we hear all too often in garden design and horticulture. I will always strive to create a garden that works for your individual needs and aesthetic tastes, however, it’s important to note that any garden and plants require some basic maintenance, so I prefer the term ‘low maintenance’. Sometimes it’s necessary to compromise on the type of planting or materials we select in order to deliver a low-maintenance space and I will work with you to find a solution that works for you.

  • It’s a common misconception that in order to design sustainably or create a biodiverse garden that the end finish will suffer. This is not the case. Clever design can always deliver something that works for your aesthetic tastes while also considering the environment and the creatures we share our gardens with.

  • Yes, I can absolutely help. I offer a number of services and can create a bespoke offer based on your needs.
